Promise the Stars: Deliver Glitter Glue

If you use email or have a Facebook account, you’ll want to read this.

Right now, your boss or school can demand that you hand over your Facebook, Twitter, or email password, and there is nothing you can do to stop them. Some people have even been fired from their jobs for refusing to reveal their passwords! But that could change with the introduction of the Password Protection Act.

All previous attempts by US lawmakers to ban this practice have failed, in part because internet users haven’t made it a priority and spoken out against it. The Password Protection Act is our opportunity to finally end “Give up your password or else” policies.

US lawmakers are asking for our help, so sign the Access petition, and we’ll deliver your signatures directly to an undecided Congress before they vote on the bill.

Tens of thousands of us rallied against CISPA to protect our privacy from being shared between corporations and governments. Now we have the chance to be proactive about keeping our personal lives private online. Employers can’t go through your postal mail or your file cabinet. So why is it okay for them to fire you for refusing to turn over your password?

There are approximately 875 million people on Facebook — imagine what we can do if we can mobilize a portion of this to affect change? While this bill is not perfect, our support will ensure that the strongest protections for us and our passwords are kept in the bill.

Our passwords belong to us, not schools, governments, or our employers. Our passwords are the keys that protect our private lives, the people we communicate with, and all of our personal information.

This is an issue that affects each and every one of us, so we are counting on you to help spread the word. Start by signing the Access petition, then share it with everyone on Facebook and on Twitter.

Thanks for your support,
The Access Team

P.S. The House passed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, but the fight has just begun. The Senate will be taking up cyber-security legislation soon, and we will continue to push technology companies to support the privacy of their users. About 50,000 of you have emailed Congress to demand that they put an end to the indefinite detention of civilians.

The vote on this year’s National Defense Authorization Act will probably happen NEXT WEEK.

We have to convince a majority of Congress to support an amendment to end indefinite detention, and we need to get hundreds of thousands of people involved if we’re going to pull it off.

Please help us get the word out by using these links or sharing the email below with your friends.

Here’s that email that you can send to your friends:

Friends-

We can put an end to a shocking assault on our civil liberties:

Last year’s National Defense Authorization Act included language that could allow the military to detain civilian suspects INDEFINITELY without charge or trial.

This year’s NDAA could come up for a vote as soon as next week and we have a prime opportunity to reverse this travesty of justice.

Click here to fight back: Email your member of Congress right away.

Congressmen Adam Smith and Justin Amash will put forth an amendment to make it clear that the military does not have the power to arrest and indefinitely detain civilians without charging or trying them.

Please urge your lawmakers to support their efforts and help us spread word far and wide.

Just click here to email your member of Congress right away — a few seconds of effort will help us reclaim our cherished civil liberties.

Thanks.

PS: Help us reclaim our civil liberties.  The vote could be next week, so please urge your friends to get involved right away.  You can forward this email or use these links:
